ABOUT ABOUT

Wood is an amazing raw material; it can be crafted into nearly limitless forms. Why not start with a spoon? In this class, you will learn about the structure of wood, and how shavings are made. You will learn how to use carving knives to cut, chip, whittle, shave, slice, gouge, and shape a raw hunk of wood into a useful tool. A variety of wood will be available to practice with before beginning on your own spoon. You may not be able to complete carving your spoon at DM+D, but with the skills you learn, you will be able to finish up at home. We will also cover how to treat and care for your timber utensil, in order to protect it from drying and cracking.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Davidson Thomas hails from the swamplands of the southern united states. He has been fascinated by wood his entire life. Thomas works in a wood shop in Philadelphia and saves the lives of “unusable” scrap wood to create and array of functional objects.
